Some Back-to-School Tips for Your Next Dental Exam

If you’re a student, you might’ve let your oral care routine slide this summer. That’s normal enough – neglecting teeth for sunny fun is tempting. With Fall’s arrival, though, now’s a great time to get back into the swing of things. You could impress your classmates with a healthy and gorgeous grin! In fact, your Long Island City dentist can help you do so. To that end, use these helpful back-to-school tips to pass your next dental exam.

Practice Good Oral Hygiene

If you haven’t already, establish good oral hygiene habits as you prep for the semester. They’ll keep your mouth clean and fresh amidst the bustle of schoolwork.

More specifically, follow the three core essentials of dental care. These are:

  • Daily Brushing – Remember to brush your teeth twice daily for two minutes at a time. Also, use a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoridated toothpaste when you do.
  • Daily Flossing – Floss between your teeth at least once daily, whether with traditional floss, flossers, a Waterpik, or similar tools.
  • Regular Mouth Rinses – Try to rinse with fluoridated mouthwash regularly. That way, you’ll remove plaque and bacteria leftover from brushing and flossing.

Should you stick to these morning and nightly practices, you’ll greatly reduce your risk of cavities, gum disease, and tooth infections.

Chew Sugar-Free Gum

Moving from one class to the next, you won’t always have time to brush your teeth. To compensate, consider chewing sugar-free gum after school lunches.

So long as it’s sugar-free, gum is surprisingly helpful to oral health. Chewing it causes your mouth to produce saliva, which washes away leftover food and other debris. The result is a lower chance of dental issues like tooth decay and bad breath. (For an even better effect, hydrate with water once you finish chewing.)

Get a Sports Mouthguard

There’s a good chance you’re on one of your school’s sports teams. If so, get a mouthguard before your season starts.

You see, sports can cause all sorts of dental injuries. These incidents range from tooth chips and fractures to knocked-out teeth. That being the case, you’d be wise to get and wear a sports mouthguard. This appliance would keep your pearly whites safe while you’re on the field or court. By shielding your smile from external forces, it’d protect your teeth from severe harm.

As you can see, back-to-school tips really can help with a dental exam. So, use the ones above to pass your next one with flying colors!
