You’ve just finished a delicious meal when you notice that a piece of food has gotten caught between your teeth. Your first thought for getting rid of it may be to reach for a toothpick, but that could be a riskier option than you might think. Despite their name, toothpicks aren’t good for the teeth at all; in fact, if you’re not careful, they could cause serious issues for your smile and may even lead to a dental emergency.
The Risks of Using a Toothpick
Some of the risks associated with toothpick use include:
- Gum Injury: The sharp end of a toothpick could end up cutting your gums. Not only can this result in bleeding and discomfort, but it could also leave you more susceptible to infection.
- Breaking Off: Using a toothpick improperly could cause it to break off inside your mouth. In the worst-case scenario, it could get stuck in your gums, and you’ll likely need your dentist’s help to have it removed.
- Enamel Wear: When used repeatedly, toothpicks can be very hard on your teeth, gradually wearing down the enamel that protects them. This can put you at a higher risk of developing cavities or cracking your teeth.
- Damaged Dental Work: In addition to being harmful to your teeth, toothpicks can also damage dental crowns and fillings. They could even cause a restoration to fall out entirely, forcing you to visit the dentist to have it reseated or replaced.
What are Safer Alternatives to Toothpicks?
Fortunately, there are plenty of ways you can remove food debris from your smile without using a toothpick. In many cases, the best option is dental floss, which is an effective tool for cleaning the spaces between your teeth. Ideally, you should be in the habit of flossing at least once every day.
If you have trouble using traditional dental floss, you may want to consider using a water flosser or an interdental brush instead. A water flosser is a device that uses a stream of water to clean the areas between your teeth. Meanwhile, an interdental brush is a small brush that fits between the teeth and serves as an effective way to get food debris out of tight spaces.
In some cases, you might not be able to remove food particles from between your teeth on your own. If that happens, don’t hesitate to call your dentist; they’ll make arrangements to see you as soon as they can in order to resolve the issue.
In short, using a toothpick to remove a stuck piece of food from between your teeth is not worth the risks. Fortunately, there are plenty of other ways you can solve the problem while keeping your smile safe.
